Okay I need to talk about “Can This Love Be Translated?”

Okay, real talk — I did not expect to feel anything about this show.

I started it thinking it’d just be background noise while I did other stuff. Two nights later, I’d finished all twelve episodes and was staring at my ceiling instead of sleeping.

Here’s the setup: the male lead is an interpreter. Speaks four languages, fluently, professionally. And somehow the one language he never learned is his own feelings. It’s such a simple premise, but it works so well — every scene you just want to reach through the screen and shake him.

Then there’s Cha Mu-hee. The actress he ends up working with. She’s the exact opposite — says whatever’s on her mind, immediately, zero filter. No overthinking, no hesitation. Watching these two exist in the same scene is honestly the most fun part of the whole show. He calculates every word. She just says it. That contrast alone carries most of the tension.

But here’s the part I really wasn’t ready for.

Near the end, you find out Mu-hee isn’t just one version of herself. There’s a whole other side to her — one that’s been quietly steering things the entire show without you noticing. And once you know it, you immediately want to go back and rewatch every scene she’s in, just to catch what you missed the first time around. It’s the kind of reveal that recontextualizes basically everything that came before it.

And then the last scene. They’re standing under an open observatory roof, stars and all. She’s using a translation app — because even now, even after everything, she still can’t say it in Korean. And he just… takes forever to answer. If he’d said it back right away instead of going quiet for those extra ten seconds, it probably would’ve hit different. Less weight. Less ache.

But that hesitation is kind of the whole point of the show. The two of them, fluent in everything except each other, finally running out of languages to hide behind.

I put this on for one episode just to see if it was any good.

Now I’m just going to be thinking about this couple for the rest of the week.
